Village Pizza Kitchen was launched during lockdown on Hurstpierpoint High Street in December 2020 by local resident, Jo Malone.
Having lived in the village for many years, Jo recognised that there was a gap in the market for artisan pizza and pasta and having been made redundant from her job in marketing due to Covid, decided that it was the perfect opportunity to open a pizza takeaway business. This followed a long held dream to open a pizza place, with Jo having once come close to opening a pizzeria serving New York style pizza in Brighton many years before.
From the outset, Jo's ethos for Village Pizza Kitchen was to showcase amazing British produce and to support local producers. She subsequently spent six months speaking to and visiting producers across Sussex and as far afield as the Cotswolds (to find the perfect flour!) before developing a pizza dough recipe and a pizza menu at home, with the help of husband and ex-Chef, James and kids, Finn and Roxy!
We are proud that almost all of our key ingredients are homegrown, from the flour we use in our pizza dough, to the chillies in our homemade chilli oil and the fior di latte used on our pizzas. Much of our meat and charcuterie is from nearby Ashurst and all of our cheeses are British, with many being made locally in Sussex. We make virtually everything from scratch, including of course our dough and pizza sauce, but also many of our toppings, as well as our pasta dishes and puddings.
We make biga pizza dough, which means that we make a preferment which we incorporate into our dough, before cold proofing it for 48 to 72 hours. The result is more rich and complex flavours, with a lighter and more easily digestible pizza.
Other things that are really important to us are providing excellent value, great service and being socially conscious. This is why we use highly energy efficient electric deck ovens, sustainable packaging and electric mopeds for delivery. At the heart of Village Pizza Kitchen however is simply a love of producing delicious food and we are very proud to work alongside our amazing team, who share this passion in equal measure!
We are thrilled to have been crowned Britain's Best Independent Pizza Delivery Store at the prestigious Pizza, Pasta & Italian Association (PAPA) Awards 2023! We were honoured to be presented with both our Gold and Platinum awards by esteemed celebrity chef, Theo Randall, on stage at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London. VPK Head Chef, Simonetta Held, was also a finalist in the 'Pizza Chef of the Year' category.
We were delighted to be a finalist for Best Pizzeria in the 2023 Italian Awards which were held in Leeds in October.
We were delighted to win second place in not one, but two of the three main categories at the 2022 National Pizza Awards - National Pizza of the Year and National Pizza Chef of the Year!
Thanks to many of our customers who voted for us, we were very proud to be a finalist in the Muddy Stilettos Awards in 2022, shortlisted in the Best Local Food Producer category for Sussex.
